Task 2: Case Project (5 marks)
Complete the Hands-on Project 9-4. (Nelson, Phillips, &
Steuart, 6th edition, 2019, p. 411)
Deliverable: Write a 300-500 words paper
explaining the importance of hash values used in the files you
examined. Provide screenshots of the steps completed in the
project.
Hashing is used for identifying if the file is being corrupted , modified (man-in-the-middle) attack or changed during transmission from one end of the system to the other end.
Checking the file integrity is critical if the files are highly confidential . The program works like this : There is MD5 checksum that calculates the file hash value based on directory sub directory and child files and its contents and comes with with a 256 string ascii value code .
On the received end if you are downloading the file you can validate it using the MD5 checksum tool if the file is being modified in transit or it is the same. There are scripts available in the internet that targets the files (doc or txt) changes its files contents or deletes a part of file (sub directory) of a file. You measure the checksum generator to authenticate the integrity of file .
The ".sha1" file extension ensures a checksum file containing 160-bit SHA-1 hashes in sha1sum format.
The ".md5" file extension, or a file named "MD5SUMS", indicates a checksum file containing 128-bit MD5 hashes in md5sum format.
