A 500kg lift comes down from one floor and stops with constant acceleration on another floor at a distance of 20 meters. The elevator begins to descend at a speed of 15 meters/sec.
a) Determine the acceleration component (ay) of the elevator. Explain the sign of that value.
b) Determine the magnitude of the tension (T) of the cable that supports the elevator.
c) Determine the time (t) at which the elevator stops.
d) If a 75 kg person stands on a scale inside the lift, what is the apparent weight (in lbf) marked by the scale? What would be the apparent weight (in lbf) under all of the above conditions but if the elevator rises from one floor to another?
* Remember that 1lbf = 4.45N *
