Consider your own current organization or choose any organization that you can find what their vision statement is.

Collins and Porras (2005) on pages 195 - 196 state that complete visions have three components: a core ideology (values and purpose); an envisioned future (big, hairy, audacious goals); and vivid descriptions. They gave an example from the pharmaceutical company Merck in the 1930s.

Answer the following questions to begin this week's Discussion.

1. What is the vision identified by the organization you found?

2. After reading the vision do you see the 3 components Collins and Porras referred to? Why or Why not?

3. Is it a vision that you think could help drive change? Why? Why not?

1) Here we talk about Tata Steel which is a global steel company and its vision is that it wants to become the global benchmark for value creation and corporate citizenship.

2) The vision of the company is in alignment with its core ideology of being ethical and working towards creating value for communities in which it exists. Also since it aspires to be a global benchmark in value creation and hence the vision is audacious too.

However it does not have a vivid description of the desired state and just gives a macro overview of the future state corresponding to the vision without getting into details.

3) The vision is audacious enough and it can definitely bind the workforce together to reach the global benchmark. This is because it sets a high bar and demands the employees to respond to the change in that manner to achieve the objective.
