At the order fulfillment center of a major mail-order firm, customer orders, already packaged for shipment, arrive at the sorting machine to be sorted for loading onto the appropriate truck for the parcel's address. The arrival rate at the sorting machine is at the rate of 100 per hour following a Poisson distribution. The machine sorts on average at the rate of 125 per hour and exponentially distributed. (a) What is the average number of packages waiting to be sorted? (b) What is the average number of packages in the sorting system? (c) How long must the average package wait until it gets sorted?

Answer #1

This is a single queue with Poisson arrival and exponential service rate question. Hence, above formulas will be used.

1. Using the Formula 1 in the image,

Average number of packages waiting to be sorted = 1002 / 125(125-100) = 3.2 packages

2. Using the formula 2 in the image,

Average number of packages in the system = 100 / 125-100 = 4 packages

3. Using the formula 3 in the image,

Average time a package spends in the queue = 100 / 125 x ( 125 - 100) = 0.032 hours = 115.2 seconds

During tax season the IRS hires seasonal workers to help answer the questions of taxpayers who call a special toll-free number for information. Suppose that calls to this line occur at an average rate of 60 calls per hour and follow a Poisson distribution. An IRS worker can handle an average of 5 calls per hour with service times, exponentially distributes. Assume that there are 10 IRS workers and when they are all busy, the phone system can keep 5...

A fast food franchise is considering a drive-up window food-service operation. Assume that customer arrivals follow a Poisson probability distribution with a mean arrival rate of 24 cars per hour, and that service times follow an exponential probability distribution. Arriving customers place orders at an intercom station at the back of the parking lot and then drive up to the service window to pay for and receive their order. The following three service alternatives are being considered: a) A single-channel...

Patients arrive at Max hospital for X-ray according to a Poisson process. There is an X-ray machine and arriving patients form a single line that feeds the X-ray machine in a first-come-first-served order. Past data show that the average wait for a patient is 30 minutes.
