A friend of yours contends that the acceleration of a ball tossed up into the air is positive on the way up, negative as it is falling down and zero at the top of the trajectory. What is your opinion on the matter? Justify your response based on kinematic principles.

Ans

The acceleration of the ball is the acceleration due to gravity during its whole motion in the air. It is in the down direction. If we choose up as positive direction then its always negative and vice-versa.

When the ball is moving upwards its speed decreases, so its acceleration must be downward. At the top the speed becomes zero and starts to increases in down direction which again tell us that the acceleration is in down direction.
