Staffing strategy is formulated to recruit and retain the best employees for an organization. Every organization has a different goal and value system, therefore each organization needs distinct staffing strategy.

  • Church-based soup kitchen staffed with volunteers: A church-based soup kitchen staff will work with volunteers for long hours. In such non-profit establishment loyal and great social value possessing staff must be hired to avoid conflicts and attain the noble goal.

  • Professional baseball team: For the baseball team, the staff will perform as a team all the time. Physiotherapist, doctors, trainers, and team members will not work on 9 to 5 job. Self-motivated, highly skilled, energetic and enthusiastic team members will serve the purpose. The goal and vision must be to win the game, so people having individualistic approach must be sidestepped.

  • Small internet startup: People with innovative ideas, creative mindset, risk-taking capability, analytical and research oriented with learning flexibility are the ideal choice for an internet startup. As the way people are using the internet is changing every moment, slow and rigid mindset does not work.

  • Publisher of a large newspaper in a major city: Loyal, socially aware, the neutral stance for political and religious matters and provide honest and progressive opinion will be the ultimate choice. Such qualities of employees can build the brand of newspaper in general public.

  • Police department: For the police department the aptitude, attitude, and ability are tested through competitive exams and physical tests. Such tests focus on legal knowledge, understanding of criminal psychology and fitness.

  • 400 room Luxury hotel: Social, empathetic and polite employees at each level. From receptionist to room service person, every employee must be hired on these qualities to attract new guests and welcome existing guests.

The staffing in every organization depends upon various factors such as people they serve, the industry in which they work and the goals of organizations. For a church-based kitchen has goal totally different from a 400 room luxury hotel. The people they serve are also different.

A small internet startup works in an ever-changing industry where new developments are mandatory for growth, while newspaper publisher has the industry where people learn, build opinion from their articles. Differences in the industry affect the staffing decisions. Similarly, a baseball team works not for customer base or profit like a hotel or startup.

In a nutshell, every organization should define their staffing strategy in line with their industry, audience, and vision of existence.
