Answer #1
The eigenvalue of smallestmagnitude of a matrix is the same as the inverse

(reciprocal) of the dominant eigenvalue of the inverse of thematrix.

Since most applications of eigenvalues need the eigenvalue ofsmallest magnitude,

the inverse matrix is often solved for its dominant eigenvalue.

This is why the dominant eigenvalue is so important.Quantum Mechanics for molecularorbitals use eigenvectors and eigenvalues.

They are also used in geology to describe the motion ofglaciers.

A standing wave in a rope that is fixed at both ends is anotherexample of an

eigenvector in real life.
