Question

Ple he fel .preseru, Y/spots. Letor e.

looking at TLC attached f(filtrate), p(purified crystals) a(starting aniline ) s(salicylaldehyde) , can somebody answer these questions for me ?? and calculate RF

  1. Was your recrystallized sample pure by TLC?  What were the potential impurities and how did you confirm their identities? What was the most polar spot on the TLC?  Does this data make sense based on the structure of the compound responsible for that spot?

Answer #1

Tlc work on the basis of relative polarity. More polar compound is strongly absorbed and travels less distance, from the inital point. Since anilne is less polar, it will travel more distance, while salicyldehyde due to presence of aldehyde group is more polar & travel less distance. Since you are getting 4 different spots, it means pure sample and impurity is separated mostly, a small amount may be present.

Rf value=distance travelled by sample from point of application /distance travelled by solvent
