Soap is sodium or potassium salts of fatty acids such as palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid etc. To account the PH of soap solution, it should be dealt with the concept of hydrolysis of salt. Soap can be considered as salt of a weak acid with a strong base and can be generally represented as RCOO- Na+where R is a long chain hydrocarbon.

RCOO- Na+upon hydrolysis gives carboxylic acid (the fatty acid) RCOOH and NaOH as the products. Carboxylic acid being the weak acid it dissociate only partially whereas the NaOH dissociate completely. Hence the solution experiences a domination of hydroxide ion. Hence the PH value will be in the alkaline zone that is above 7.
