All salts are compounds that are a result of a neutralization between an acid and a base. The positive ion of the base and the negative ion of the acid make up the salt, leaving water in the neutralization process.
Ionic salts are composed of two ions of permanent opposite charges and have a ratio of positive to negative ions that ensures that the net charge of the salt is always zero. In a salt, the positively charged ion is called the cation and the negatively charged one, the anion.
