1. Wireless networks have changed the way we live and work. It has impacted almost every area of existence. In your opinion, has this change been primarily positive or negative? Why?

2. Are "ad-hoc" wireless networks safe? Do a little research on the Internet and come up with your opinion (not just yes or no) but why. If you believe that ad-hoc wireless networks are safe or not safe, then explain why (in a couple of sentences).

3. Interference with wireless networks is a common challenge. What can you do, name at least 2 things, to help to prevent RF interference?

4. Why are standards so important, particularly for wireless technologies?

5. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is a method of digital modulation in which a signal is split into several narrowband channels at different frequencies. What do you think of its usage in wireless networks?

Answer #1

i) In my opinion, it is positive only. As technology is increasing day by day the needs of humans also will be increased. If we are using LAN cables as cables are wired and somewhat different to maintain. If we want to use large networking systems with more systems then we have to use more LAN cables so cables which are of heavyweight is somewhat different to maintain. But A wireless network need not use that much huge number of cables and also it has some range in which only it can work. Many educational institutions, business organizations are using these wireless networks in order to make their work very easy.

ii) As we all know that the ad-hoc devices provide us to set up a wireless connection directly from one computer to another computer without connecting to a Wifi. Sharing of files is very easy and we can also connect more than one system but within a range of 100 meters. Usage of ad-hoc devices is safe. As it is a temporary connection from one computer to another computer there are no cyber attacking.

iii) In order to prevent or block the RF interference, there are a few things which are to be kept in our mind. They are:

a) We have to use a minimum number of cables and our cables must be very short. We have been careful near routing.

b) If we are using the cables for the connection we have to use the wires which are shielded with copper etc.

c) Check the strength of the signal either it is weak or strong.

d) We have to maintain RFI filters which are meant to avoid the deflections.

Note: In case of wireless networks we have to check for the bandwidth.

iv) Standards are very important because they describe how an organization should use the wireless network which includes privacy, security, data usage, etc. They provide the equivalence to use all the functions related to the technology within the organization. The wireless standards include IEEE 802.11b/g etc.

v) As we all know very well about the OFDM and it is used mostly for the wideband communication which is meant for wireless networking, digital television, etc. It uses a large number of narrow bandwidth signals which defends against to single modulated large bandwidth. As it supports the narrow bandwidth we can use wireless networks with a large range.
