Question

Can a low barometer reading be used to predict maximum wind speed of an approaching tropical cyclone? Data for this problem are based on information taken from weatherwise. For a random sample of tropical cyclones, let x be the lowest pressure as a cyclone approaches and let y be the maximum wind speed of the cyclone.

9.

a) The scatter diagram is given by,

b) Here we can see that, there is strong negative correlation .

c)

r=\frac{n(\sum xy)-(\sum x)(\sum y)}{\sqrt{[n\sum x^{2}-(\sum x)^{2}][n\sum y^{2}-(\sum y)^{2}]}}

= \frac{6*556315-(5823*580)}{\sqrt{[6*5655779-(5823)^{2}][6*65750-(580)^{2}]}}

= -0.99

Here value of correlation coefficient is negative and it is close to 1. So we can say that there strong negative correlation between x and y. This imply that as value of x increases the value of y decreases.
