Required strategies for test taking.

1. Actively use the CORE Learning System. This means when you walk into the test room, you

have already . . .

  1. Collected complete and accurate information from all reading assignments and class sessions,

  2. Organized many different kinds of effective study materials,

  3. Rehearsed these study materials with a distributed study schedule, and

  4. Evaluated to confirm your understanding of all study materials.

2. Create a positive affirmation about taking tests. Create an affirming statement such as,I am fully prepared, test-smart, and confident of earning a high score. Along with your personal affirmation, repeat this test-taking affirmation to revise your beliefs about your ability to do well on tests.

3. Visualize success. Create a mental movie of yourself taking the exam with great success. In your mind, picture yourself understanding every question, answering each one quickly and cor- rectly, finishing on time, and, later, getting your test back with the grade you want (or even higher). Playing this positive movie in your mind often will build your confidence and prepare you to think, feel, and act positively during the real test. (Review Journal Entry 10 for a refresher on how to create a visualization.)

4. Arrive early and get comfortable. Avoid the stress of running late. Get to the room in plenty of time, and choose your preferred place to sit. If seeing other people leave early gets you nervous, sit up front where you can’t see what’s going on behind you. Set up your supplies (pens, pencils, paper, white-out, allowed books, calculator with fresh batteries, and so on). Have a watch or clock so you can keep track of time. Consider bringing a picture that inspires you, like a photo of your family or a picture of yourself in a graduation gown. If it’s a long exam, bring water and snacks, if allowed.

5. Prepare yourself physically and emotionally. Be sure to get a good night’s sleep and eat well before a test. You don’t want to be distracted by tiredness or hunger. As your instructor hands out the test, breathe deeply and relax. Your studying is done. Now it’s game time and your goal is simple: Earn the most points possible. You’re ready. Repeat your affirmation. Visualize your suc- cess. Take another deep breath and get ready to score! You can do this!
