Describe Utilitarianism. Give a utilitarian argument for a policy you think is a good idea. Give a utilitarian argument for a policy you think is a bad idea.
Utilitarianism is one of the most popular ethical theories whose core idea is to determine what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ on the basis of the outcome. According to it, the most ethical choice would be that which will produce the greatest good for the greatest number of people (utexas.edu). Utilitarianism is known as a form of consequentialism as it lay on the basis of the idea that the consequences or results of an action, law, policy etc. will enable it to be categorized as good or bad, right or wrong (utm.edu).
The best example of a utilitarian argument would be the building of the border wall between the United States and Mexico. It is good for the United States which is facing problem of illegal migrants, drug trafficking and human trafficking from the Mexican borders. However, on the other hand, it has affected the families who want better lives for their children and themselves even though it means crossing the border illegally. Border wall also represents racism and discrimination towards Mexicans. So, it depends on which side of the wall one is in, whether building the border wall is a good or a bad idea.
