Answer #1

Probability that one of the tyre fails = 2% =0.02; Probability that one of the tyre doesnt fail = 98% =0.98

Probability that one of the spare tyre falls = 10% = 0.1; Probability that one of the spare tyre doesnt falls = 90% =0.9

We will not be able to drive the car in the following conditions:

1. Two tyres fail, one of the spare falls.

Probabilty of two tyres failing = (COMBIN(4,2)*0.02^2*0.98^2)

Probabilty of one spare falling = (COMBIN(2,1)*0.1^1*0.9^1)

Total Prob =(COMBIN(4,2)*0.02^2*0.98^2)* (COMBIN(2,1)*0.1^1*0.9^1) = 0.0415%

2. Two tyres fail, both of the spare falls.

Probabilty of two tyres failing = (COMBIN(4,2)*0.02^2*0.98^2)

Probabilty of both the spare falling = (COMBIN(2,2)*0.1^2*0.9^0)

Total Prob =(COMBIN(4,2)*0.02^2*0.98^2)* (COMBIN(2,2)*0.1^2*0.9^0)= 0.0023%

3. Three tyres fail.

Probabilty of 3 tyres failing = (COMBIN(4,3)*0.02^3*0.98^1) = 0.0031%

4. Three tyres fail, one of the spare falls.

Probabilty of 3 tyres failing = (COMBIN(4,3)*0.02^3*0.98^1)

Probabilty of one spare falling = (COMBIN(2,1)*0.1^1*0.9^1)

Total Prob =(COMBIN(4,3)*0.02^3*0.98^1)* (COMBIN(2,1)*0.1^1*0.9^1) = 0.00564%

5. Three tyres fail, both of the spare falls.

Probabilty of 3 tyres failing = (COMBIN(4,3)*0.02^3*0.98^1)

Probabilty of both the spare falling = (COMBIN(2,2)*0.1^2*0.9^0)

Total Prob =(COMBIN(4,3)*0.02^3*0.98^1)* (COMBIN(2,2)*0.1^2*0.9^0) = 0.000031%

6. Four tyres fail.

Probabilty of 4 tyres failing = (COMBIN(4,4)*0.02^4*0.98^0) = 0.000016%

7. Four tyres fail, one of the spare falls.

Probabilty of 4 tyres failing = (COMBIN(4,4)*0.02^4*0.98^0)

Probabilty of one spare falling = (COMBIN(2,1)*0.1^1*0.9^1)

Total Prob =(COMBIN(4,4)*0.02^4*0.98^0)* (COMBIN(2,1)*0.1^1*0.9^1) = 0.000003%

8. Four tyres fail, both of the spare falls.

Probabilty of 4 tyres failing = (COMBIN(4,4)*0.02^4*0.98^0)

Probabilty of both the spare falling = (COMBIN(2,2)*0.1^2*0.9^0)

Total Prob = =(COMBIN(4,4)*0.02^4*0.98^0)* (COMBIN(2,2)*0.1^2*0.9^0) = 0.0000002%

Therefore, Total probability = Sum of all these scenarios = 0.04754%
