SHORT ANSWER:

1.) Explain “Hard versus Soft” acid-base behavior.

2.) Explain, in terms of ΔS & ΔG, why imperfections occur in crystals & be able to describe at least two of the four main types of defects, with a drawing of each.

3.) Describe how electron transfer occurs in either the outer sphere or the inner sphere redox reaction mechanism (choose one OR the other).

4.) Explain how to synthesize the cis and trans isomer of a square planar complex, using the trans effect and structure drawings.

5.) Draw all the isomers that can occur for a given complex ion – review the three basic geometries & what isomers are typical for each.

6.) Explain the color for each of three given complex ions, based on their relative CFSE [metal charge & ligand donor ability], & the bonding atoms in the ligand of each.

7.) Explain the basic kinetics: effect of concentration on rate and what factors determine “effective” collisions.

8.) Explain why the coordination number [# of neighbor particles] depend on type of cubic unit cell.

Answer #1

1.Non polarizable ions are considered as hard where as polarizable ions are considered to be soft and the interaction between them is primarilybelectrostatic in nature

2.Imperfections occur when randomness is more i.e when del S is less than 0 ,and del G is more than 0
