Assuming a defect density of 0.2 defects cm-2 layer -1, a 5 mask process,
a die size of 4x4 mm2, 800 chips per wafer and a processing cost of 400
USD per wafer, determine the yield and the cost per chip using the yield
you have determined.

You are selling 1 Mio. devices for 5 USD each. What is the gross profit
(i.e. sales price – cost to make the device based calculated above) you
are obtaining per device and in total for the 1 Mio devices?

Answer #1
Processing Cost USD 400
chips per wafer 800
defect density 0.2
defect pcs 160
net chips 640
net cost per chip 0.625

The processing cost to make the device chips is USD 0.62 per chip. If the company sells 10,00,000 chips, the the gross profit would be = USD 5 - 0.625 = USD 4.375 (Selling Price - Cost Price)

GROSS PROFIT = USD 4.375 X 10,00,000 = 43,75,000 USD
