Given the four (a-d) research situations below, a.) State the null hypotheses. and B.) determine the appropriate statistical method you would apply to the problem to determine whether the result is statistically significant.

a) A researcher interested in the relationship between the percentage of single men and rape rate collected the data regarding rapes per 100,000 and the percentage of single men in the population for eight cities over 1-year period.

b) A researcher conducted an experiment to examine how safe persons felt in three communities (Note: safe is an interval level variable). Random samples of persons were selected from three types of communities.

c) A community organization determined how safe people felt in an earlier poll. They recorded each person’s score on how safe they felt (SAFETIME1). After a random shooting in the neighborhood, they queried the same individuals after that event and recorded how safe they felt (SAFETIME2). (Each person had a unique identifier and higher scores indicated that they felt safer).

d) A researcher is interested in determining if an antidepressant (Nominal, yes, no) should be used in conjunction with therapy (Nominal, yes, no) to address post-traumatic disorder (PTSD, interval DV). She measures PTSD under the four conditions.

Answer #1

A) a. NULL HYPOTHESIS:

There is no significant difference in their means.

i.e Percentage of single men and rape rate collected the data regarding rapes per 100,000 and the percentage of single men in the population for eight cities over 1-year period are equal.

b. We use Independent sample t-test because the samples are drawn at different space.

B) a. NULL HYPOTHESIS:

There is no significant in the means of the three community.

b. We use F-test. Since the sample of the three communities are drawn at random, so we use CRD- completely    randomised design for this experinment.

C) a. NULL HYPOTHESIS:

There is no significant difference the SAFETIME! and SAFETIME2. We say their means are equal.

b. Since the sample are taken from the same induidual before and after treatment. So we use Paired t-test to test the equality of their means.

D) a. NULL HYPOTHESIS:

The reason for the test is not clear so we assume the problem is to validate that association.

so the null hypothesis is given by, There is no association between antidepressant given and not given.

b. The test used to test this Hypothesis is Chi-Sq test for association.
