Answer #1

Differences between Waste Management and Sustainable materials management:-

  • Sustainable materials management seeks the highest use of all resources while waste management focuses on managing and reducing waste and waste pollutants at the end of the lifecycle.
  • Sustainable materials management focuses on the entire lifecycle of materials and products while waste management focuses on just the end-of-life management of waste products.

1. Sustainable materials management (SMM) is a systemic approach to using and reusing materials more productively over their entire life cycles. It represents a change in how our society thinks about the use of natural resources and environmental protection. By looking at a product's entire life cycle, we can find new opportunities to reduce environmental impacts, conserve resources and reduce costs.

2. because of Sustainable materials management is predicated on life cycle design which is a process for identifying the positive and negative impacts of the life cycle of materials as they are produced and consumed in an economy.

3. Examples of ecologically sustainable materials practices could be -

(a) biological control of dengue mosquitoes by copepods Mesocyclops (Mesocyclops aspericornis) (instead of using insecticides)

(b) use of solar energy/wind energy as a source of energy (instead of the use of non-renewable fossil fuel energy)

4. The issue of waste collection is extremely significant because it links to health, environment, and safety. Uncollected waste can lead to flooding, insects, rodents, and diseases. Improper disposal of waste can pollute water and air, making it an important environmental challenge.

5. Launching a successful construction and demolition waste recycling operation around the globe is a challenge today, predominantly because secondary materials markets are yet to be integrated. Reuse and recycling of construction and demolition waste have been employed over the years, and various techniques have been investigated. However, the economic and environmental viability of its application seems limited. This paper examines the extent of reuse and recycling of construction and demolition waste for seven major types of construction materials: soil, concrete, metal, hardcore, wood, cardboard/paper, and plasterboard.
