What does this pithy quote really mean in the cosmological sense? It is a concise way of saying that the ultimate fate of the universe is tied to its density. If the universe is a (jlat) critical density universe, its expansion will asymptotically slon down, but never reverse. If the density is higher than critical density, we have a closed universe where the expansion eventually slows to a stop and reverses direction. If the density is lower than critical density, we have an open universe where the expansion never slows to a stop.
