Answer #1

Heat a dry sample of sodium hydrogen carbonate. Collect vapours and pass these vapours through anhydrous copper sulphate. If the colour of anhydrous copper sulphate changes to blue, it can be said that sodium hydrogen carbonate has water of hydration.

Note: Anhydrous copper sulphate is white whereas coppersulphate pentahydrate is blue in colour. When a dry sample of sodium hydrogen carbonate is heated, vapours are obtained that contains a mixture of carbon dioxide gas and water vapours. When these vapors are passed to a sample of anhydrous copper sulphate, the color changes from white to blue.

Anhydrous copper sulphate absorbs water vapours to form copper sulphate pentahydrate.
