Individuals experiencing severe stress from surgery, burns, injury have elevated glucose levels because of the physiological stress which stimulates the catecholamine release. This stimulates the glucagon secretion which causes hyperglycemia. Additionally, inflammatory stress triggers the release of proinflammatory cytokines which increase insulin resistance in muscles resulting in hyperglycemia. Considering the above information, how would you interpret the HA1C lab of a patient prior to a severe burn if the blood glucose had been well managed?

Start by defining HA1C first!)

Answer #1

HA1C also called as glycated hemoglobin, is haemoglobin with glucose attached. This test evaluates that average amount of glucose inside body over past three months.

In an individual before burn injury if HA1C is tested and for that individual if glucose is well managed, then the percentage for A1C is monitored. In normal individual the A1C level should be less than 5.7%.If the range is in between 5.7% to 6.4% the person is at risk. There is a formula calculating estimated average glucose... so the formula is

28.7 × A1C % - 46.7=eAG
