Question

8) When performing a High-Altitude Simulation Test, what gas is use? What device is used to deliver this gas? Why is a nasal cannula also placed on the patient? Do we turn the nasal cannula on? What FIO, is need for a High- Altitude Simulation Test? 9) Give me a few examples of a hypoxic environment. 10) For patients whom require long-term oxygen therapy. during a flight, what increase above their normal prescribe oxygen flow will ensure that they will not become hypoxic during the flight?

Answer #1

Answer 8:

while performing high altitude stimulation test mixture of gases with oxygen saturation 15.1%is used .

Device used are:

Oxygen mask

Nasal cannula are also put on the patient in small unpressurized aircraft that do not exceed certain altitudes . The cannula provides extra oxygen to compensate for lower oxygen content available for breathing at the low ambient air pressure of high altitude, preventing hypoxia.

Fio2 is used at high altitude stimulation test are approximately 15.1 % .

Answer 9:

Hypoxic environment examples are:

1.low or depletion of oxygen in water.

2. Increased biological oxygen demand in water.

3. High altitude above 14000ft.

4. Burning of waste in open spaces.

5. Gaseous crisis for eg , methyl isocyanide , CO2, etc.

6. Poisoning like cyanide poisoning, lead poisoning etc.

Answer 10.

Provide oxygen 2 to 4 litlitres per minute to the patient for respiratory diseases who become significantly hypoxic during a flight , if pao2 is <50 % administration of supplemental oxygen is recommended, providing continuous oxygen doesn't cause dry mucosa, if notified priory to the airline authority special oxygen supply is arranged for hypoxic patient who cannot tolerate above high altitude.
