Electron Configuration of an atom follows the following three rules
Aufbau principle says that the atomic orbitals with the lower energy levels are occupied by electron first and then electrons go to the higher energy levels.
Pauli Exclusion Principle says that in an atom two electrons cannot have all the same four electronic quantum numbers.
Hund's rule says that every orbital in a sublevel is first singly occupied by an electron before any orbital is doubly occupied.
In the case of the electron configuration of Cupper to get more stability an electron from the 4s orbital is excited and goes to a 3d orbital because a completely full (10 electron) or half full (5 electrons) d sub-level is more stable than a partially filled d sub-level.
