Why does 0.01M KMnO4 not change color at first when it is added to 0.025M of Na2C2O4 (sodium oxalate)?

I did a titration of KMnO4 and Na2C2O4 a week ago and initially when I added the KMnO4, it turned the sodium oxalate a deep purple. It later turned colorless after about 15 seconds. Why is that? Is there a reasonable explanation?

Answer #1

Actually reaction between KMnO4 and oxalate is very slow reaction. So initially there is no reaction between KMnO4 and oxalate, that is why color of KMnO4 appeared in solution. After some time reaction was initiated then KMnO4 is converted into Mn^2+ ions which is almost colorless, then solution appeared as colorless.

In general in this titration we have to heat the oxalate solution upto 60-80 degrees centigrade. Because rate of the reaction is directly proportional to temperature, so reaction starts immediately when we add KMnO4 to hot oxalate solution, then color of KMnO4 disappeared immediately when KMnO4 added to hot oxalate solution.

The reason for 15 seconds is reaction between KMnO4 and oxalate is very slow reaction.
