Three reactions between a Grignard reagent and a carbonyl compound are given below. Draw the main organic product for each reaction and indicate if H+ or H- is needed to complete each reaction. (The starting material structures are provided in the answer fields as a starting point for your drawings.)
The reagent which donates electrons and undergoes the formation of a new carbon – carbon bond is known as a Grignard reagent. Grignard reagent is an organometallic reagent with a formula. Here, represents alkyl group or aryl group, represents magnesium, and represents halogen. In this reagent, (alkyl group or aryl group) acts as nucleophile.
In ketones, Grignard reaction undergoes two steps:
1)Nucleophilic attack
2)Protonation
Example:
In acid chlorides and ester, 2 equivalents of Grignard reagent react and form a new carbon – carbon bond. Then, this reaction undergoes nucleophilic attack twice cleavage of the leaving group occurs. This reaction proceeds in four steps:
1)Nucleophilic attack.
2)Removal of a leaving group.
3)Nucleophilic attack.
4)Protonation.

Draw the structure of the aldehyde or ketone and the Grignard reagent that will react to form the following compound: CH3 Н3С. ГОН • You do not have to consider stereochemistry • In cases where there is more than one answer, just give one. • Draw the Grignard reagent as a covalent magnesium bromide. • Draw one structure per sketcher. Add additional sketchers using the drop-down menu in the bottom right comer. • Separate multiple reactants using the + sign...
Write the product and a complete arrow-pushing mechanism and propose (the) major product(s) for the following transformation. After a Grignard reaction. .... Each of the Grignard reactions we have studied so far produces an alcohol as the major organic product. Alcohols can be used as starting materials for a number of organic reactions. Use this exercise to consider the range of reactions that can be performed after a Grignard reaction. For each reaction sequence below, suggest a Grignard reagent and...
