Answer #1

Polysulfide are class of compound which contain one or more than one atoms of Sulfur linked to each other by molecular covalent bonds .

Since long chains of Sulphur atoms are present so they have general formula Sn2- where S2- is sulphide ion that is sulphur having negative of 2 charge and cation present can be Hydrogen , Sodium , ammonium etc.

Polysulfide are used in tanning process , in organic synthesis , battery technology etc..

They are called polysulfide chromophore because chromophore is basically containing group of structures or metal or molecule which are connected together and can provide color to structure by either electron transfer or delocalisation .

S2- is basically sulfide ion which is basic monomer unit of polysulfide and color of this sulfide ion is not much dark , it is light yellow because less number of Sulphur linked are present .

If we increase number of Sulphur atoms then number of chromophore groups increases so color becomes darker

like Na2S3 has blue color or ultramarine color type , Na2S4 has blue ice color type

similarly solution color goes on becoming darker .

You can see basic structure for three polysulfides are drawn below among with their cation .

Na Na sssNa Na-ss Na - S-S- Na (N2S2 N253) (NG1S4) NG2Sy) l
