Question

Ch. 17 Fold Vergence

The figure on the left is a map of a region of metamorphic rocks (the Moine Series of N.W. Scotland). Metasandstones are unornamented and metapelites are stippled. These rocks are cut by very coarse-grained quartz-orthoclase-muscovite pegmatite sheets (black). The folds plunge to the SW at angles of 50 – 60º. The shapes of small folds, as seen on horizontal outcrop surfaces, are indicated with the symbols, S, M or Z according to their symmetry. Fault breccias are found at localities with X symbols. Determine the traces of the major folds indicating whether they are synforms or antiforms and discuss the relationship of the pegmatite intrusions and the folds.
