P wave indicates atrial systole or contraction
QRS complex indicates ventricular systole or contraction
Atrial pacing indicates the distance between two p waves while ventricular pacing indicates the distance between two QRS complex.
If pacing interval is regular is equal distance is maintained between the waves otherwise it is considered as irregular.
Fig 1
Atrial pacing- Irregular, SA node is firing at an irregular rate
Ventricular pacing- Regular
Pacing interval- Irregularly regular
Identification- Abnormal conduction, SA node firing at an irregular rate but the conduction through Av node is regular
Fig 2
Atrial pacing- regular, SA node is firing at a regular interval
Ventricular pacing- regular, current is passed at the regular interval through AV node
Pacing interval- regular
Identification- Normal atrial and ventricular function.
Fig 3
Atrial pacing- absent
Ventricular pacing- present at regular interval
Pacing interval- regular
Identification- normal ventricular function.

For each of the following rhythm strips, determine the presence of atrial- and ventricular- paced activity, the paced interval rate, and then identify the rhythm. All strips are lead II un- less otherwise noted. Figure 8-11 Atrial pacing? Paced interval Ventricular pacing? Identification Figure 8-12 Atrial pacing? Paced interval Ventricular pacing?.
