usually expressed on a per unit basis

Normally, in case of producing some items, a projection is made before the production starts. It disusses about how much of raw material to be used, how many labourers are required etc. All these are done under estimations. The actuals may or may not equal with estimations. But when making estimations, a particular crieteria is taken describing the raw materials, labour etc. This crieteria is called as Standard. It is usually estimated on per unit basis.
