The three things are crucial in deciding the features of the soil which are NPK (Sodium, Potassium and Nitrogen). The amount of nitrogen in the soil can be reduced due to leaching or denitrification and then soil becomes less fertile. And the amount can be increased by adding more inorganic nitrogen into the soil. Nitrate basically comes in the soil through the residues of plants and animals. When denitrification occurs, the inorganic nitrogen is lost and the gap is filled up by gaseous nitrogen which is not at all good for soil health. Thus, nitrogen is very helpful for better growth of the plants.

The amount of nitrogen can also be increased in the following ways -

Growing of Legumes

Adding manure and fertilizers

Plants release Carbon dioxide. Carbon has better features to hold water. You would be amazed to know that soil has 2nd most amount of carbon in it just after fossil fuels. Carbon releases important nutrients for the growth of plants and improves the health of the soil. There is also one benefit that if soil absorbs more carbon, the amount of carbon in the atmosphere would be reduced and thus we would be able to solve the problem of global warming.

Apart from Carbon, nitrogen also affects soil pH. If soil has more carbon content, it tends to be more acidic and so on. It is also important to maintain the acidity of the soil
