Assessment of pain

  1. Physical dimension: It mention effect of anatomical and physiologic structure causes pain. This help to identify the sources of pain. Here patient undergone appendectomy so the usual response after surgery is pain on surgical site.
  2. Sensory dimension: It help to identify the location, quality and severity of pain.

Assess the pain whether dull, throbbing, stabbing, shooting or radiating. This can be measured by numerical scale such as 0-10 exhibited behavior in response pain.

Assess the behavior associated with pain such as guarding, splinting, tension up, crying, moaning and massaging to body part.

Here patient need medication for pain, patient administered morphine 4hours for pain.

3.Sociocultural dimension: It influence belief about pain medication, treatment option and hospitalization.

Here patient received morphine intravenously every 4hour, though patient have pain and enquire about pain medication. So assess the preferences of pain management.

4.Cognitive dimension: It refers thought, attitude, belief, intention and motivation related to pain. Evaluate the cognitive capacity of the patient prior to assessment of cognitive dimensions . Patient may refuses opioid due its addition. Here the patient may have the fear about her medication.

5.Affective : It reflect feeling and sentiments in presence of pain. So assess the emotional status of patient and verbalization of feeling essential to reduce pain.

6.Spiritual dimension: Assess the religious practices and spiritual preference for pain.
