1. The rationale behind steroid administration pre delivery is for lung maturation and surfactant production to reduce surface tension .

2. The changea in the pressure volume curve indicate that there is an increase in pressure and to fix this tidal volume has to be decreased .

3. Interventions include :-

Administer the surfactant as ordered

Institute thermoregulation

Prevent hypotension hypovolemia

Correct respiratory acidosis with ventilator support

Correct metabolic acidosis by administering sodium bicarbonate

RDS Nursing Interventions :-

Continuous monitoring & close observation

Obtain necessary specimens for lab

Continuously monitor pulse oximetry

Suction as indicated, not ET suctioning

Maintain thermoregulation

Provide nutrition (parenteral, avoid oral)

Cluster nursing activities

Educate parents & provide emotional support

Silverman-Anderson Index
