Semi Crystalline polymers:
The polymers possessing both amorphous and crystalline areas are said to be semi- crystallisable polymers. In some polymers, there is a distinct boundary between the two crystalline and amorphous regions whereas, in some polymers, there is no such clear demarcation between the two regions.
The two purposes of annealing semi- crystallisable polymers are:
- Enhancement of crystallinity
- Enhancement of Mechanical properties such as heat conductivity and strength
The annealing of semi- crystallisable polymers can result in morphological alterations such as thickening of the polymer as a result of melting and recrystallization processes. The annealing time and annealing temperature are two important factors for enhancement of crystallinity in the semi- crystallisable polymers.
Two kinds of morphologies can be observed on annealing the semi- crystallisable polymers:
- Lamellar type polymer
- Spherulite type polymer
Both the morphologies are a result of crystallisation. Molecules are intertwined and there is a random arrangement of molecules before annealing while after annealing there is a more ordered arrangement of molecules resulting in higher crystallinity.
