Community Action Against Asthma
This program involved a household intervention and an environmental exposure assessment study. The primary stakeholders for this program were the health division, a community coalition, primary healthcare providers, parents, and children/adolescents.
The household intervention utilized a community health worker model to help caregivers reduce their child’s asthma triggers and manage their asthma. The intervention was effective in reducing the proportion of children and adolescents (ages 7–18 years) who required unscheduled medical visits and used asthma controller medications inadequately. The intervention also improved lung function of children with asthma by reducing two types of coughing symptoms; increasing some behaviors related to reducing indoor environmental triggers for asthma, such as dog allergen in dust; and decreasing the caregiver’s depressive symptoms.
The exposure assessment study explored the effect of ambient air pollutants on lung function levels in children/adolescents with asthma. The results showed that higher levels of air pollutants were associated with acute reductions in lung function, especially among susceptible subgroups of asthmatic children, such as those experiencing a respiratory infection.
