Answer #1

Gas chromatography is based on an adsorption phenomenon. The stationary phase is a liquid or solid polymer coated on a capillary tube from inside. And the mobile phase is an inert gas like Helium of nitrogen. After injecting the sample, the substance is vaporized without decomposition and carried with the mobile phase such as helium gas. Compounds from the injected mixture interact with the stationary phase with different rates and hence they have different elution time or it is also called as the retention time. For every individual compound has different retention time so that this becomes the factor which distinguishes the compounds present in the mixture. As the different compounds elute at a different time at the end of colomn they are identified with different detectors such as are the flame ionization detector (FID) and the thermal conductivity detector (TCD).

The retention time is dependant on many factors and to name a few, the carrier gas flow rate (mobile phase), column length and the temperature.

Organic chemistry post-lab question: "Why is important to add the alkyl halide dropwise in your reaction? (Hint: your reaction is not heated, but you still need a water-cooled condenser!)" Please answer in detail! Here is a copy of the experiment, thank you! The Grignard reaction is an important synthetic process by which a carbon-carbon bond is formed. Magnesium metal is first reacted with an organic halide. The resultant organo-magnesium halide (Grignard reagent) is then combined with a carbonyl compound, ultimately...

Synthesis reactions are performed in many different industries including fertilizers, plastics, pharmaceuticals and many others. The goal in a synthesis reaction is to generate and obtain as much of the desired product as possible.
