Electron Configurations: Rules and Principles
Classify each orbital diagram for ground-state electron configurations by the rule or principle it violates.
Drag the appropriate items to their respective bins.
Aufbau Principal : The subshell with minimum energy is filled up first and when this obtains maximum number of electrons , then the next subshell of higher energy starts filling .
Hence order of filling of various subshell
1s , 2s , 2p , 3s , 3p , 4s, 3d , 4p
Hund's Rule : according to the this law , electrons are distributed among the orbital of a subshell in such way as to give the maximum number of unpaired electrons with parallel spin .
Pauli principal : two electron in an atom can not have same values of all four quantum numbers . If two electrons are present in an orbital , their spin should be oppsite .

Portions of orbital diagrams representing ground-state electron configurations of certain elements are shown below. Use these to answer questions 9 and 10. ______Identify which orbital diagram violates the Pauli Exclusion Principle. A. A B. B C. C D. D _____Identify which orbital diagram violates Hund's rule. A. A B. B C. C D. D
Consider that a single box represents an orbital, and an electron is represented as a half arrow. Orbitals of equal energy are grouped together. The orbital diagram will be valid if it follows both Hund's rule and Pauli's principle. Sort the various orbital diagrams based on whether they are valid, whether they break Hund's rule, or whether they break Pauli's exclusion principle. Drag the appropriate items to their respective bins. View Available Hint(s) Reset Help 1s 2s ls 2s 2p...
Discuss the significance of the Pauli Principle, Hund’s rule and the Aufbau principle in obtaining the ground state configurations of multi-electron atoms.
Aufbau Principle Indicate which of the given electronic configurations are true ground state confiqurations for the respective atoms and which are false Take care! There are some exceptions to the simple rules.)
2. Consider the O; molecule (a) Indicate the ground state orbital diagram, the ground state electron configuration, the bond order and whether O2 in the ground state is diamagnetic or paramagnetic. (8 points) (b) A Lewis structure obeying the octet rule can be drawn for O, as follows Does the above Lewis structure represent a paramagnetic state or a diamagnetic state? (2 points) (c)Use the molecular orbital diagram for O, to show that the above Lewis structure corresponds to an...
