The objective of this week's assignment is to submit a paper discussing the applications of encoders and decoders. As we know from this week's lesson, an encoder is a "device that converts a weighted numeric input line to an equivalent digital code, such as a hex or octal." A decoder is the opposite, or a "device that converts a digital code, such as hex or octal, into a single output representing its numeric value." Your 2-page paper should include a more detailed overview of encoders and decoders, and should focus on their application in today's world. Current and emerging technologies should be discussed. Be sure to include references and cite appropriately.

ENCODER:

As you mentioned that an encoder is a "device that converts a weighted numeric input line to an equivalent digital code, such as a hex or octal."

According to me

An encoder is a combinational circuit. it will produce the binary code(1,0) for every value of input.It has 2^n inputs and n outputs. In simple terms we can say that it can change the data from one form to the other form. encoding is the key feature for security. Encoder block is included at the last stage of the transmitter in the field of communication. It is similar to the encryption of data.

Applications:

  • Encoders are used in all the fields where the security is the main parameter. Security for the web based applications is maintained by the encoders.
  • Binary coding is mainly used by digital devices because it is easy to process by the hardware devices.(mainly in computers).
  • Based on the priority of the inputs also the encoding will takes places. In the communication field 'n' no.of inputs will be present at the given time based on the requirement, any one input is given the priority for the encoding,so that it can be transmitted over the channel.
  • It is also used to convert any motion like linear can be changed into digital signal. So that the data can be processed and stored for the future purpose.
  • In the war area, encryption is very much need to safeguard the information from the enemies. Flying robots are used to carry the data over the air.
  • In data compressing also encoders are used to convert our plain information to chunks of data like zip,RAR files.

DECODE:

As you mentioned that," A decoder is the opposite, or a "device that converts a digital code, such as hex or octal, into a single output representing its numeric value."

According to me,Decoder is also a combinational circuit,it will produce the any output for every value of binary (1,0) input.It has n inputs and 2^n outputs. In simple terms we can say that it can change the data from one form to the other form. decoding is the key feature to obtain the encoded data. Decoder block is included at the first stage of the receiver in the field of communication. It is similar to the decryption of data.

Applictions:

  • Decoders are mainly used in the microprocessors and controllers(computers) which are to decode the address in the memory locations.i.e.,the data given by the user can't be read by the system then these decoders acts as a mediators to convert this address into the system understandable address.
  • The information that is encoded at the transmitter will be decoded only by using the specific decoder, which has the same key as that of the encoder in the communication. So that security is maintained.
  • Decompression is done by using the decoders.
  • In the field of digital electronics decoders are used to construct the adder circuits.
  • particular memory locations are also selected by the decoders in RAM'S in phones or in computers.
