Theory
A coherent statement or set of ideas that explain observed facts or phenomena is called a Theory. It is a hypothesis cofirmed by observation, experiment etc.
New criterias in determining good theories
Traditionally there are a list of criterias that evaluate a Theory. Nursing theories were evaluated on the basis of the criterias like testability, importance, empetical and practical adequacy. In addition to this, there are some new criterias in determining a Theory is good or not. Those criterias are:
* The criteria of Heurism
If a theory has good heurism, it may stimulate new thinking in others. Other researchers, who develop new theories may quote the theory.
* The criteria of 'Ready or prompt to action'
A good theory prompts the individual to act by revising the act or practice, refine and hone the practice, alter the performance, if needed, based on the new information.
* Saturation
Another new criteria in determining good theories is criteria of Saturation. A good theory should be saturated with many examples of phenomenon.
* Criteria of suitability or fittingness
A good theory should fit to the local context,surroundings or circumstances or environment that derived from. Then only it will become useful and applicable. A theory should be suitable to indigenous perspective.
