Explain what effect the following scenarios would have on the calculated specific heat (i.e. would it be calculated artificially high, low, or have no effect). Your explanation should address what variable(s) would be affected by the scenario and how that affects the calculation of specific heat.(1.5pt each) A student accidently dropped the piece of metal on the countertop during the process of transferring it from the boiling water bath to the calorimeter, but was quickly picked up and put into the calorimeter to complete the experiment. a. Both temperature probes were measuring temperatures 5°C higher than the true temperature. b. c. It was assumed that no heat was absorbed by the calorimeter constant (i.e. the calorimeter constant was ignored). The piece(s) of metal were only present in the boiling water bath for 1 minute before transfer to the calorimeter. d.

The question is simple and very easy to solve.

A) It is told that the student has accidentally dropped it and hence it was in contact with some other surface for some time and hence it has lost some of heat energy . Obviously now the increase in temperature would be less and we assume it thinking that it is due to high specific heat capacity although it is not.

B)As the temperature probes are wrong the answer obtained would be wrong, now our goal is to find whether this increases specific heat or decreases it.

As the mass of calorimeter + mass of liquid + mass of metal is going to be raised by 5 degrees than original this will give us the information that specific heat of liquid is less.

C)As it is assumed that calorimeter does not take any heat then it implies that it has been absorbed by water. Even after absorbing excess of energy it's temperature is being raised only by little it implies that water has higher specific heat.

D) Then the temperature of metal would not reach the temperature of bath and following the same logic as that of A, we can conclude that high specific heat would be noted.
