What would be the effect of raising the temperature or increasing the carrier gas flow rate one the ability to resolve two closely spaced peaks?(experiment : The dilute sulfuric acid-catalyzed dehydration on 2-methyl-2-butanol(t-amylalcohol) proceeds readily to give a mixture of alkenes that can be analyzed by gas chromatography)

Answer #1

1] normally, lower boiling compound move faster in comparison to higher boiling compound. with rising the temperature of the column, the retaintion time of will be decrease and the separation of compound will be less.

2] with increasing the flowrate the retaintion also decreases and thereby the separation of compound will be less.

so it can say that in both cases, the closely spaced peak will be overlap more.

N: B: for better separation of closely spaced peak, the temperature and the flow rate have to be decrease.

    4. The compounds in a mixture separated by GC can be identified by their retention times. If you Suructor nad not told you which peak in the GC chromatogram corresponded to which alker you didn't know the boiling points of the alkenes, how could you determine the identity or each peak by its retention time? Identities of the components in a mixture separated by GC can also be determined by the technique called "spiking". Suppose you had run a chromatogram...

Experiment Write Up Proposal You will write up a synthesis procedure for one reaction that could be potentially run in a face- to-face Chem 2321 lab session. Your proposal will include an introduction and procedure. The procedure will include step-by-step instructions for running the reaction (including reaction monitoring), work-up. (product isolation and purification), and analysis (characterization). You will need to include sample calculations for percent yield and provide sample spectra analysis. You must upload your proposal as a single document...
