rate responds to thé diller (b) Describe the overall pattern of the relationship. Is it linear? Is there a positive or negative association, or neither? Find the correlation r. Is a helpful descrip- tion of this relationship? (c) If begging intensity is the main factor determin- ing food received, with higher intensity leading to more food, one would expect the relative growth rate to increase as the difference in begging inten- sity increases. However, if both begging intensity and a preference for their own babies determin the amount of food received (and hence the rela- tive growth rate), we might expect growth rate to increase initially as begging intensity increases but then to level off (or even decrease) as the parents begin to ignore increases in begging by the foster babies. Which of these theories do the data appear to support? Explain your answer

b. The overall pattern is not a linear relationship. The points are scattered. There is a weak negative association. The correlation is -0.1749.
Correlation is not a very helpful description of this relationship.

c.

Difference in begging intensity Relative growth rate 8.5 0.93 1.15 0.83 4.5 1.07 1.14 1.13 0.95 1.15 1.03 1.33 1.3 0 1.5 1.5 -3.5 -5.5 -6.5 8 1.15 0.85 0.9 1.33 -12 -12.5 -14 0.85
If we look at the data careful we see a pattern in the relative growth rate based on the relative begging intensities.

When the difference in the begging intensity is between -3.5 to 3.5, relative growth rate is greater than 1, that is foster babies grow at a faster rate than the natural babies.

But when the difference is more than begging is less than -3.5 or ,more than +3.5, the relative growth is less than 1.

Hence we can see that the second theory, where the growth rate increases intially as begging increases but then level off or decrease as the parents begin to ignore increase in begging by the foster babies.
