Question

The heterocyclopentadienes below contain more than one heteroatom. For each molecule, identify the orbitals occupied by each lone pair and determine whether the molecule is aromatic. For the sulfur and oxygen, two sets of lone pairs will each be in a different orbital, so place 2 orbitals in the box.

A nucleophile resembles a Lewis base because both have electron pairs to donate. The more tightly held an electron lone pair, the more basic it is (see polarizability in this paragraph and Leaving Group Stability below). Nucleophiles tend to prefer to bond to carbon and bases to H. Charged atoms are more nucleophilic than uncharged atoms. Nucleophilicity is inhibited by crowding which decreases a nucleophile's strength, but bulkiness tends to make a base stronger. Increasing polarizability of electrons favors nucleophilicity....
