Question
Determine the ranking of stability (i.e., stability number) between conformers A and B by using the source molecule, reference-1. Using reference-1, draw the structures as indicated by their stability as requested below. Show all major source(s) and derivations used in determining the answer for each question in order to receive full credit.

Answer #1

Conformer A will be more stable due to the bulky group (cyclobutane and butyl group) are at trans- position to each other in the chair conformation allowing lesser steric hinderance as compared to conformer B.

Most stable conformer will be the one where cyclobutyl and cyclo propyl group are trans to each other and similarly butyl and propel too are in trans position to each other in the chair conformation whereas the most unstable conformation will be where all the bulky group are in cis-position in boat conformation.
