Answer #1
1)

a) Photoelectric effect. A threshold frequency was required forphotons (threshold frequency requires threshold energy) for an atomto emit an electron. This clashed with classical thought, becauseit was frequency, not intensity, that determined ionization.

b) 400 - 700 nm

c) violet (small wavelength, large frequency)

d)

It would absorb violet, which has a complementary color of yellow. It would appear yellow

2)

Blue has a wavelength of 440-490 nm. So FeNCS2+ absorbs blue.

Blue's complementary color is orange. It appears orange.

3) Roses absorb the color complementary to red (green).
Violets absorb orange light, so they appear blue

The electronic absorption spectrum UI (Cr(NH3)6]3+ (aq) is shown in Figure 11.5. One of the observed peaks is centered at about 303 nm. 1.a. What is the approximate value of the wavelength for the two other peaks? Which one of these three peaks falls in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum? The wavelength at this peak is (Amax), and this transition accounts for the color of the complex ion in solution. The energy of the transition occurring at...
