Answer #1

The redox reactions are as shown.

During a redox reaction, one species is oxidized (its oxidation number increases) and other species is reduced (its oxidation number decreases). Thus a redox reaction involves simultaneous oxidation and reduction. When there is no change in the oxidation number, the reaction cannot be classified as redox reaction.

(1) The oxidation number of Al increases from 0 to +3. Hence, it is oxidized.

The oxidation number of Ag decreases from +1 to 0. Hence, it is reduced.

Hence, this reaction is a redox reaction.

(2) There is no change in the oxidation number. Hence, this reaction is not a redox reaction.

(3) The oxidation number of Ba increases from 0 to +2. Hence, it is oxidised.

The oxidation number of chlorine decreases from0 to -1. Hence, it is reduced.

Hence, this reaction is a redox reaction.

(4) The oxidation number of Mg increases from 0 to +2. Hence, it is oxidized.

The oxidation number of bromine decreases from 0 to -1. Hence, it is reduced.

Hence, this reaction is a redox reaction.
