Relay: - Relay consists of a coil circuit, that determines whether a set of contacts are open or closed. The result when powers is applied is the opposite from what is normally was. Normally meaning when no power is applied to oil. Some Relays are Normally open or normally closed. Normally open the contacts will close when power is applied to the coil. Solenoid: - A Solenoid is similar but has no contacts in and of itself that deliver current. It is just a magnet that moves a piston in most cases. This piston can inturn move an outside set of contacts say in a relay assembly.
