An athlete’s performance can be drastically affected by basic physics. The position of the centre of gravity and assuming a posture wherein your c.o.g. favours your balance and velocity.

In this case, when an athlete is changing his or her direction, they need to lower their centre of gravity. Athletes often do this by bending their knees a bit and leaning towards their direction of change. This provides with greater reaction force from the ground, thus, additional acceleration is attainable.
