1. According to kepler's first law of planetary motion the planets movies around the sun in paths which is geometrically similar to an ellipse.mathematically defined as curve in a plane surrounding two focal points and the sum of the focal distance is constant.

simply, is a cone is intersected by a plane the locus of the points of the intersection forms an ellipse.Unlike a circle an ellipse has a major axis and a minor axis.

2.On January 3rd the earth is at its closest position perihelion and on June it is at its furthest position from sun i.e aphelion.If the orbit had been a circle and sun is in the middle then earth would have at same distance from the sun.Since the orbit is an ellipse the earth lies at different distance on the major axis on January and on June.So yes this is consistent with Keplers first law.
