Tension is maintained in a string as in the figure below. The observed wave speed is v = 21.0 m/s when the suspended mass is m = 3.00 kg. (You may assume that the length of the vertical portion of the string is negligible compared to the length of the string.) (a) What is the mass per unit length of the string? (b) What is the wave speed when the suspended mass is m = 2.30 kg?

Answer #1

v=√(T/μ)

μ is mass per unit length

a.)μ=T/v^2=mg/v^2=0.0667 kg/m

b.)v=√(T/μ)=√(mg/μ)=18.387 m/s
